Garbage Collection and Yard Waste

The City of Kannapolis provides solid and yard waste collection once a week to residents through a contract with Waste Management. Garbage collection will occur on ALL holidays EXCEPT Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. For those two holidays, Waste Management will operate on a one-day delay for the remainder of the week.

To find out your garbage/yard waste and recycling pick-up day, go to the Garbage and Recycling Pick-Up Day page and enter your address.

Residents are issued one 96-gallon rollout garbage container. Containers should always be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. on the regularly scheduled pickup day to ensure collection. For those residents that require a second container, they can be purchased by completing the Second Rollout Application and contacting the Customer Service Center at 704-920-4399. There will be a one-time charge of $55.00 for the container and a fee of $2.50 per month added to your water bill. Garbage and recycling containers are the property of the City of Kannapolis.

In the event of a missed pickup (not due to a holiday or posted delay), please contact the Public Works Department at (704) 920-4200 within 24 hours.

Bagged Yard Waste

The following items are considered yard waste: leaves, grass clippings, pampas grass, garden debris (shake off as much dirt as possible), cornstalks, bamboo and other plant or garden material etc.

Guidelines for yard waste collection:

  • Bag or bundle yard waste, including pampas grass, cornstalks and bamboo; place at curbside on regular household collection days.
  • Bag garden material. Remember to shake off the dirt. Opaque (dark or white) bags must be left open; clear or transparent bags should be tied closed.
  • Keep brush piles no larger than 4feet x 12feet x 4feet. One pile per address per week of this size can be collected.
  • DO NOT mix yard waste with household waste or other items.
  • Keep in mind that crews cannot pick up wood containing nails or metal, bags that weigh more than 50 pounds, logs, firewood, debris from major tree removal or land clearing or construction and demolition waste (i.e. windows, flooring, drywall, plywood). Check with local landfills for disposal of these items.
  • Live Christmas tree and wreath pickup will occur on regular yard waste days. Remove all ornaments and lights and place the tree/wreath curbside for pickup.
  • Artificial Christmas trees and wreaths will be collected with bulk waste. Remove all ornaments and lights and place the tree/wreath curbside for pickup.

Items Not Accepted in Garbage Collection

The following items will not be picked up by Waste Management:

  • Construction or remodeling debris, concrete, brick or other items generally related to remodeling such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs and large amounts of carpet.

  • Paint, batteries, oil, propane cylinders, tires, or car/truck parts.
  • Infectious waste or any hazardous waste
  • Logs, firewood, stumps, root balls, debris from major tree removal or land clearing.
  • In addition, see the list below of items banned from landfills, these items should not be placed in your garbage container.

Medication Disposal

Rather than put unwanted or expired medications down the drain or in the garbage, there is a safer alternative. Kannapolis citizens can drop off any unwanted or expired medications to a member of the Kannapolis Police Department’s VNOC Unit for disposal. The drop-off location is the Criminal Investigations Division Annex located at 316 South Main Street in Kannapolis. The drop-off service will be available every Tuesday between the hours of 10 a.m. and noon.
