How to Apply for a Business Privilege License or Itinerant Merchant/Peddler LicenseFinance & Tax

Each individual, partnership, sole proprietorship, firm, company or other legal entity who conducts a business or provides a service, or delivers or picksup goods, within the City of Kannapolis must pay the appropriate tax for a business privilege license from the City unless exempt under the State statutes.

The business privilege license is valid from July 1 to June 30 and is renewable on an annual basis. The license must be properly displayed and available for inspection. Issuance of the license is not an endorsement or certification of the business or service by the City.

If a transicent or seasonal business or service, a Itinernat Merchant or Peddlers license may be required instead of a regular business privilege license. Contact the Finance Department at 704-920-4380 for more information.

Do I Need a Federal and/or State Tax ID Number?

You will need to contact the appropriate Federal and State agencies to determine if you need any business tax identification numbers.

What Do I Need To Know About Opening A Business?

Prior to opening a new business/service within the City of Kannapolis, the business must contact the City's Planning & Zoning Department at 704-933-5999 and Fire Department to verify any applicable ordinances and/or code requirements for the physical location. This requirement applies to home-based businesses within the City limits as well. The issuance of a business privilege license does NOT constitute acceptance or approval of the business having complied with existing local, state or federal regulations and/or laws.

What Is An Itinerant Merchant/Peddlers License?

If you are going to operate a business or service in a transcient or seasonally manner, you will need to obtain an Itinerant Merchant/Peddlers License instead of a regular business privilege license.

This classification is under a different ordinance and has certain requirements for approval. Further, a Temporary Use Permit may be required from the City's Planning & Zoning Department prior to the issuance of this license.
