Cross Connection Control

Download the Cross Connection Control Ordinance

Next week the Public Works Department will begin notifying business owners in the City of Kannapolis of a federal and state mandated regulation requiring the city to inspect, monitor and enforce the Cross-Connection Control Ordinance. The ordinance is aimed at protecting the city's public water supply from contamination or pollution due to siphonage or backpressure.

The ordinance requires specific businesses to install an appropriate backflow device at the business owner's expense. City staff will visit all facilities or services that have a potential for backflow into the public water system to help them determine what steps may be necessary. Identified businesses will be required to purchase, install and maintain an appropriate backflow prevention device.

"We want business owners to be on the lookout for this information, and to understand that we plan to work with them to bring all businesses into compliance. It's our responsibility to protect our water supply, and this is one more way to do that," stated Public Works Director Wilmer Melton.

The Public Works Department has the primary responsibility of preventing contamination and pollution of the public water system, protecting consumers and the environment.
