The inaugural Jiggy with the Piggy Barbecue Challenge will come to historic downtown Kannapolis as part of Village Fest 2013. The City of Kannapolis, in partnership with the Kannapolis Rotary Club and the Cannon Memorial YMCA, will host this Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS)-sanctioned event that is sure to become an annual downtown event.
This free, family-friendly festival is expected to draw around 10,000 visitors to Kannapolis and will introduce residents and guests to the fast-growing world of competition barbeque.
Cook teams from all over the country will come to compete against each other in various categories, including chicken, ribs, beef brisket and pork. Judging will be conducted by KCBS-certified judges according to KCBS regulations. KCBS is the nation’s leading barbecue sanctioning body. Over 50 professional and championship barbecue cook teams will enter and compete for a total of $12,850 in prize money, along with the honor of being named Grand Champion.
A People’s Choice Wing Competition will be held on Friday evening. Festival attendees will be able to purchase wristbands to sample wings from all teams and vote for their favorite. The winning team of the People’s Choice Award will be presented prize money and a trophy during the awards ceremony Saturday afternoon. There will also be a People’s Choice Pork BBQ Competition on Saturday.
The Jiggy with the Piggy Barbecue Challenge will raise funds for community causes supported by Kannapolis Rotary Club, including but not limited to local high school student scholarships, food shelters, literacy training and tapping the potential of children and families addressing their most pressing needs.
Jiggy with the Piggy is part of the 34th Annual Village Fest. Village Fest, sponsored by the Cabarrus Events Association, takes over downtown with a classic car show, arts & crafts vendors, food and evening concerts.
The North Carolina Music Hall of Fame’s Rock & Rythm 5K will kick off activities on Saturday morning. Amtrak is sponsoring National Train Day at the Kannapolis Train Station, 201 S. Main St., from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Stop by for facepainting, cake, clowns, storytelling and more.
The Jiggy with the Piggy Barbecue Challenge is part of the new Old North State Series, four KCBS-sanctioned barbecue competitions in the North Carolina. Cities partnering to be a part of the Old North State Series are Kings Mountain, Salisbury, Lexington and Kannapolis. Championship barbecue teams competing in these events will accumulate points to earn the honor being named the 2013 Old North State Series Grand Champion. The first runner-up will be named Reserve Grand Champion. Winners will receive $3,500 and $1,500 respectively.

Kings Mountain: April 19-20
Lexington: April 26-27
Kannapolis: May 10-11
Salisbury: September 20-21
