With its location in downtown Kannapolis at Dale Earnhardt Boulevard and West C Street, the 16-acre Village Park is Kannapolis' premiere park attraction. Each year the park is the location of the Summer Concert Series. In 2004, over 22,000 people from across the Charlotte region attended five concerts in the inaugural season of the Village Park Amphitheater.  The 2005 concert series featured seven concerts. Village Park also offers a playground and a greenway that connects to Bakers Creek Park. With all of these attractions, Village Park is a year-round destination for families.

The Kannapolis Parks and Recreation staff has prepared a $500,000 Parks and Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF) grant for Phase II renovations.  The PARTF trust fund has been completed and was approved in May.  The second phase of renovations will add even more family oriented activities including a train that families can ride and a water spray park. Renovations will also include a small restroom facility, four picnic shelters and landscaped open space. The grant application is due to the State of North Carolina by January 31, 2005. The City will be notified of funding by May 2005.

A PARTF grant will provide half of the approximately $1 million needed for Phase II renovations. The remaining funds will come from a combination of Community Development Block Grant funds and City funds. The Kannapolis Rotary Club and Cabarrus County may also provide a total of $30,000 in additional funds for the park.

In 2001, Village Park Phase I renovations were awarded a $250,000 PARTF grant, the highest amount given at that time. Phase I renovations cost $750,000 and paid for grading, the 2,400 square foot amphitheater and the 5,000 square foot multi-purpose building that will be under construction this year. City Council recently approved an additional $100,000 to add more restrooms to the building to accommodate crowds at events like the summer concert series and to repair the entrance road and parking lot.
