8th St Greenway Awarded Enhancement
Grant
Parks and Recreation Director Gary Mills received notice in mid-February
that the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) awarded
a $64,469 transportation enhancement grant under the Transportation
Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) for phase three of the
8th St. greenway. The greenway will be a 10 foot wide paved trail
and pedestrian walkway connecting 8th St to Loop Rd and become another
section of a two mile greenway that will one day link Bakers
Creek Park to the Central Business District.
Phase one of the 8th St greenway connects Bakers Creek Park
with West A St and phase two extends to 8th St. These phases are
not currently funded. The goal is to one day have a two mile loop
from Bakers Creek Park, along West A St., up 8th St to Loop
Rd and over to Village Park. From Village Park, a walkway already
connects to the Bakers Creek Park greenway. In May, Mills
will learn if a Parks and Recreation Trust Fund grant from the State
for the first phase of Village Park renovations will allow the Bakers
Creek greenway to be extended through Village Park to Loop Rd. Grant
guidelines require the City match 20 percent of the grant. The City
also received a TEA-21 grant for the Oakwood Ave. sidewalk project.
