Adopt-a-Street
Picking up litter helps eliminate pollutants in the environment and makes Kannapolis look better. The adopt-a-street program is available to families, schools, civic clubs, businesses, religious institutions, professionals or social groups. Call the Public Works Department at 704-920-4200 to sign up. Here's what you need to know to get started:

  • The program is a two-year commitment to clean a section of roadway, which must be a minimum of 1 mile, at least four times per year.
  • Participants must be 12 years old. Every participant below 18 must sign a parental release form. At least, four adults (over 21) participants are required. For each six volunteers under the age of 18, one additional adult is required.
  • Safety training, garbage bags, gloves, safety vests, pick-up tools, traffic control devices, a First Aid Kit and pick up and disposal of filled bags are provided.
  • Participating groups will receive a street sign with their organization's name and year their commitment began, a certificate suitable for framing and other recognition.
  • One person and one alternate per group need to be designated as the program liaison. The liaison will contact the program coordinator a minimum of 5 working days prior to cleanup activities.
  • Each volunteer will be required to attend a safety training session and sign a waiver/release form before participating.
  • The City will provide different colored garbage bags for recycling. The volunteer organization is responsible for taking recyclables to a recycling.

Second Rollout Container

The City of Kannapolis issues every household one 96 gallon rollout garbage container. For residents who need a second container, the option is available to purchase one for $55, which is the city’s cost per cart, and pay a $2.50 monthly collection fee. The fee will be added to water and sewer bills or mailed separately for customers without water and sewer service from the City of Kannapolis. The second rollout container becomes the property of the resident.

To obtain a second 96 gallon, rollout container, please download the following form and return it to the Public Works Department. For more information, call 704-920-4200.

Download Application for a Second 96 Gallon, Rollout Container

The $2.50 monthly fee covers the additional charge assessed by Waste Management of the Carolinas Inc. (WMI), the city’s solid waste contractor. Establishing the fee sets a business model of service provision that assesses the cost of the service to those who choose it. Since garbage collection is paid for from property tax revenue, the fee also eliminates any impact on those funds.

Once an application is approved for an additional 96-gallon rollout container, it will be delivered on a Tuesday or Thursday and left at the end of the resident’s driveway.

If a resident with a second container moves outside the city limits or wishes to discontinue paying the monthly collection fee for the second container, they must contact the Kannapolis utility billing office at 704-933-1133.

If a resident with a second container moves to another residence inside the city limits, the additional container can be moved to the new residence. The original container must be left at the residence.

Please record the serial numbers on both your containers for reference.

If this container is destroyed or damaged beyond repair due to neglect or abuse, replacement will be the responsibility of the resident.

The Public Works Department Damaged can repair damaged lids and wheels for a fee that will be set to cover the cost of materials. Please call 704-920-4200 to request a repair. Repairs will also be billed on the monthly utility bill or mailed separately where needed.

  • Return carts to their storage areas as soon as possible after collection but no later than 11 pm on the day following after regularly scheduled pickup.
  • Put only household solid waste in containers.
  • Do not put items on top of containers.
  • Do not surround containers with bulky items or extra bags. Instead put them neatly to the side of the container.
  • Never put hot ashes or yard waste in containers.
  • Bag all items to avoid spilled or blown garbage.
  • Breakdown cardboard boxes and place inside containers.
  • Put furniture, appliances and other items too large for containers curbside the same day as regular pick-up.
  • Residents are allowed to put a 35 gallon galvanized metal, rubber, fiberglass or plastic garbage can curbside for collection with their rollout container.
  • Remove doors from refrigerators or freezers when placed for disposal.
  • Construction or remodeling debris, tires, paint, motor oil, batteries, car parts or any hazardous waste, concrete or brick or other items generally related to remodeling such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs and large amounts of carpet will not be collected. These items must be taken to a landfill. Call 704-920-2950 for information on the Cabarrus County landfill and 704-278-2211 for information on the Rowan County landfill.

  • Place yardwaste curbside on regular household collection days.
  • Make sure tree limbs are no larger than 12 inches in diameter and six feet in length.
  • Keep limb or brush piles no larger than 4ft x 12ft x 4ft. One pile per address per week of this size can be collected.
  • Tree trunks, stumps and rootballs must be no larger than 12 inches in diameter.
  • Bundle yardwaste (except limbs) including pampas grass, cornstalks and bamboo.<
  • Bag garden material. Remember to shake off the dirt. Bags may be clear, transparent or opaque. Opaque bags must be left open.
  • Do not mix yardwaste with household waste or other items.
  • Remember, crews cannot pick up wood containing nails or metal, bags that weigh more than 50 lbs, logs, firewood, debris from major tree removal or land clearing, construction and demolition waste (i.e. windows, flooring, drywall, plywood).
