Water Resources
The mission of the Water Resources division is to
provide prompt professional customer service, safe and sufficient
drinking water and to protect the environment by collecting and
treating wastewater, maintain the City's infrastructure and enhance
the region's environmental resources.
Under the city, 210 miles of wastewater lines and
225 miles of water lines service 14,764 sewer customers and 16,373
water customers. Twenty-six employees are responsible for the operation
and maintenance of the system. Director Wilmer Melton also participates
in the regional effort to secure new water supply options and works
to keep citizens informed of the overall status of the city's water
supply.
To insure better service to customers of the Kannapolis
water system, the department embarked on an aggressive wastewater
collections system preventative maintenance schedule and a rights-of-way
clearing program. The clearing program keeps the 55 miles of wastewater
outfall lines free from overgrowth and litter, guaranteeing crews
access to perform routine maintenance. The Water and Wastewater
staff also completed infrastructure improvements to bring City water
to the Coddle Creek area.
In this fiscal year, the department will oversee
the completion and implementation of the water and wastewater master
plan, the renovation of the Water Treatment Plant, which began in
October 2001, and will continue to coordinate additional improvements
to the water and sewer system.
